        London Branch Technical Talk

This is a London and Kent Branch event organised and run by our London  Branch in partnership with ICORR. Other members and non-members are welcome to join us.

Overview:- In this presentation Matt will talk about the facilities and mechanical tests conducted in hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and gaseous hydrogen (H2) environments at TWI’s purpose-built laboratories located at Granta Park, near Cambridge.

Hydrogen containing environments can have a major degrading effect on material properties (such as fracture toughness and fatigue resistance), due to the ingress of hydrogen atoms. TWI Limited have a long history of conducting cutting-edge mechanical testing and associated research and development of metals in these aggressive environments.

There is very little standardisation and guidance available for conducting tests in these environments, which makes conducting tests and interpreting results challenging, with the added critical consideration of maintaining health and safety standards.

Speakers:- Matt Haslett MBA CEng MIMechE FWeldI IWE

Speaker Biography:-  Matt is the Team Leader for Environmental Testing in the Fatigue and Fracture Integrity Management Section at TWI, with experience in mechanical and structural engineering. His main areas of expertise lie in fracture toughness testing, mechanical testing, Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA), full-scale testing and bespoke mechanical testing.

Matthew also organises TWI’s training course on Structural Integrity Assessment to BS 7910 and lectures on the Design and Construction module of the EWF/IIW Welding Diploma.

This event is intended to highlight and compare the way in which different industry sectors approach the management of inspection and integrity as the plant they are operating enters the late life phase and possibly beyond original design life.

Integrity management strategies operate under differing legislative regimes and constraints, as well as operational and financial.

The modification, or otherwise, of asset integrity management and maintenance strategies as plant ages and demonstrations of continuing fitness-for-service that may be required will be described for a range of industries.

Experts from industry will be presenting on a range of topics:

This is an East Midlands Branch event organised and run by our East Midlands for its members. Other members and non-members are welcome to join us.

Overview: This presentation will explore the technical advancements made by  Safra into aluminium wires and their impact on the realm of aluminium railroad car construction looking at cutting-edge wire technology and its unique properties and practical applications in enhancing work safety and productivity. Michael will illustrate the advantages of the smooth surface of the aluminium wires which leave no residuals, and the technical aspects of trouble-free wire feeding, achieved through the elimination of torsional stress during payoff from the drums, resulting in longitudinal straight welding seams. This presentation will also consider the challenges of use in rail car construction, truck trailers and the automotive industry.
