South Western and South Wales Branch Technical Talk

This free event is organised by our South Western and South Wales Branch for our members. Other members and non-members are very welcome to join us.

Overview:-  This presentation about diffusion bonding should be of interest to academics and particularly the research engineers who are looking for new value-added manufacturing processes. Diffusion bonding is normally used to bond the alloys, composites and ceramics which cannot be joined using conventional welding processes such as arc or laser welding. Fundamentals of solid-state diffusion bonding of similar or dissimilar alloys and latest developments in the field will be outlined. Exemplary applications will include fabrication of key components for vaccine sterilisers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speakers:-  Dr Amir Shirzadi (Senior Lecturer in Materials Engineering, The Open University)

Speaker Biography:-  Dr Amir A. Shirzadi is a Senior Lecturer in Materials Engineering at The Open University (UK) and the Director of Cambridge Joining Technology Limited (www.cjt-limited.com). Dr Shirzadi received his PhD on Diffusion Bonding from the University of Cambridge in 1998. He has more than 40 publications and been granted several USA, UK and European Patents, all related to his inventions on joining methods. Dr Shirzadi is a Charter Engineer, Fellow of The Welding Institute (TWI) and Fellow of Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.

          West Midlands Branch Technical Talk

This is a West Midlands Branch event organised and run by the West Midlands Branch Committee on behalf of Branch members. Other members and non-members are very welcome to register for this talk. .

Overview: Tanks were originally developed as ‘armoured landships’ to try and break the stalemate of trench warfare in WW1. Since then they have developed rapidly, combining the three principle concepts of Firepower, Mobility and Protection. This talk will examine that ‘Iron Triangle’, looking at the interplay of technology and tactics which led to very different tank designs entering service with different armies, and consider if the latest developments in anti-tank systems – widely seen in Ukraine – have now rendered the tank obsolete.

          Speaker: Steve Cater (TWI Ltd)

Speaker Biographies: Steve is responsible for research into the friction stir welding (FSW) of both thick section light metal alloys such as aluminium and magnesium, and high plasticisation point materials such as steel, titanium and nickel-based alloys.  A metallurgist by training, and winner of the Richard Weck Award for his work on steel, Stephen led TWI’s Core Research Programme (CRP) into the development of FSW for steel, and also led the welding elements of two recent projects looking at steel FSW for marine construction.

              Sheffield Branch Technical Talk

This is a Sheffield Branch event organised and run by our Sheffield Branch for its members. Other members and non-members are welcome to join us.

Overview: TWI’s 3-year RESURGAM project for friction stir welding (FSW) steel has been completed and the speaker will present content which is only now able to be publicised. Highlights are being able to weld steel up to 25mm thick and to do so in air and under water – an output of the project was a prototype ROV that can weld patches to damaged ships without them needing to go into dry dock.

Welding steel has long been something of a Holy Grail in the FSW community. The process was invented by Wayne Thomas at TWI for the joining of aluminium in 1991 and quickly adopted by industry for the fabrication of structures where the high strength, toughness, good fatigue life and low distortion produced by the process were required. The technique was soon further developed for the welding of other difficult to weld metals such as magnesium, copper and titanium. FSW of steel, however, remained elusive. For many years TWI has been working to industrialise the process in steel and has now reached the stage where it is possible to weld both carbon and stainless steels in lengths up to 30m in 12mm thick metal using a single pass process or 25mm thick using a double pass process. Welding takes place in the transformation temperature regimen and it is possible, by careful choice of the welding parameters, to produce welds that are stronger, tougher and more fatigue resistant than the original parent metal, and with low distortion and good corrosion resistance. Welds have been made in air, under water and under oil, all with excellent properties.

Speaker:  Steve Cater FRIN MEI ARINA AWeldI

Speaker Biography: Stephen Cater is a Principal Project Leader at TWI’s Yorkshire Technology Centre, responsible for research into the friction stir welding (FSW) of both thick section light metal alloys such as aluminium and magnesium, and high plasticisation point materials such as steel, titanium and nickel based alloys. A metallurgist by training, and winner of the Richard Weck Award for his work on steel, Stephen led TWI’s Core Research Programme (CRP) into the development of FSW for steel, and also led the welding elements of two recent projects looking at FSW for marine construction. These programmes were HILDA (High Integrity Low Distortion Assembly) and MOSAIC (Materials Onboard: Steel Advancements and Integrated Composites). Stephen is currently leading the effort for the marinisation of FSW of steel for the RESURGAM research project. Prior to joining TWI, Stephen served as a soldier with experience of both combat tours and technical attachments to DSTL (Defence Science & Technology Laboratory)

Having worked for SSE for 6.5 years and as a contractor to their sites for 5 years previously, Matt can provide a backdrop for some of the challenges within older offshore wind farms, growing pains as they’ve expanded in size and how an operator prepares for life extension.

JOIN OUR OFFSHORE ENERGY TECHNICAL GROUP (TG4) WEBINAR

              Who should attend?

The event is focused on current welding technology and fabrication standards for fabrication of heavy wall offshore structures for the offshore wind sector. The event should be of interest to anyone involved in design, fabrication and operation of offshore assets, with emphasis on windfarms, e.g. to fabricators, designers, weld engineers, quality control personnel and windfarm developers.

              What will you learn?

The event is focused on the fabrication of heavy wall monopile and jacket structures for use offshore. These are highly utilised structures both in terms of peak loads, for example during installation, and fatigue requirements during operation. The challenge is to be able to scale up cost-effective production of “mass produced” assets while achieving the required quality and performance for over 20 years of operation with minimal maintenance.

The event will concentrate on high productivity alternatives of current technology such as submerged arc welding and will explore promising future technologies such as additive manufacturing and electron beam welding.

Experts from industry will be presenting on a range of topics:

              • Bart Theunissen, Manager Process Technology & Innovation, Sif on Practical Experience of Utilising Electron Beam Welding for Monopile Transition Piece Longitudinal Weld (Provisional)
              • Stephan Marre, Technical & Applications Director, Lincoln Electric on Improved Productivity Saw Process For Wind Turbine Towers
              • Declan Foley, Fabrication Quality Manager, SSER on Offshore Renewables Fabrication Standards
              • TBC, Lincoln Electric on Additive Manufacturing for Offshore Wind Industry
              • TBC, TWI Ltd on TBC

              East Midlands Branch Technical Talk

This is an East Midlands Branch event organised and run by our East Midlands for its members. Other members and non-members are welcome to join us.

Overview: This presentation will explore the technical advancements made by  Safra into aluminium wires and their impact on the realm of aluminium railroad car construction looking at cutting-edge wire technology and its unique properties and practical applications in enhancing work safety and productivity. Michael will illustrate the advantages of the smooth surface of the aluminium wires which leave no residuals, and the technical aspects of trouble-free wire feeding, achieved through the elimination of torsional stress during payoff from the drums, resulting in longitudinal straight welding seams. This presentation will also consider the challenges of use in rail car construction, truck trailers and the automotive industry.
