Overview: This talk, on problems with bolts and threaded fasteners, is intended to take a topical view of this long-standing issue.

Alan starts with the threaded components used as shear connectors for the earthquake resistance on the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge, the failures and their causes.

The talk will briefly mention of problems with V grade and Y grade bolts in the 1970s, due to hydrogen embrittlement due to manufacture and recent problems with high tensile bolts in building structures in London and then moves into the modern offshore environment with issues due to environmental corrosion in offshore wind turbine structures, and the work in Germany to define and limit the conditions for its occurrence.

Speaker Biography: EurIng Alan Denney CEng. FWeldI, is a Director of AKD Materials Consulting Ltd.

Alan is a metallurgist, welding engineer and corrosion engineer. He has worked in many project areas including: building structures, offshore platform construction and design, chemical process systems, and also onshore and offshore pipelines.

He started with Ove Arup and Partners in 1969 and worked for a number of John Brown Companies for more than 20 years before joining Wood Group to set up Ionik Consulting in London. Alan then moved to Saipem UK in 2003, heading up the Welding and Materials Engineering Group.

Alan retired from Saipem in 2012 and since then has been working as a consultant performing ‘expert witness’ work for arbitrations and court cases.

He holds BSc and MSc degrees, is a Chartered Engineer, a European Engineer and an International Welding Engineer.

Alan is the President of the London Branch of The Welding Institute and he chairs the Technical Groups co-ordination committee for The Welding Institute.

He is also on the committee running the Young Engineers Programme for the Institute of Corrosion.
