All members of Southern Counties Branch of The Welding Institute are invited to attend this year’s Branch AGM and talk: The Cutting Edge - Development of Swords.

Annual General meeting: The AGM is an opportunity for Branch members to hear reports from the Committee on the achievements and work of the Branch over the year; to make plans for the year ahead; to review the accounts and to elect the Committee for the next year.

The last 12 months have been unprecedented and now more than ever, Branches need to come together to provide, help support and encouragement to the membership as well as to the Institute as a whole.

Please register your attendance in order to join the meeting via a Zoom Link.

Please note, the AGM is for Branch Members only and will commence at 18:45 prior to the talk at 7pm.

Overview: This talk covers the and how three cultures developed very different techniques to achieve the same end result: a sharp, tough, impact-resistant blade. This talk is primarily metallurgy based and hopefully will dispel a few myths along the way.

Speaker: Stephen Cater (Principal Project Leader) TWI)

Speaker Biography: Steve is responsible for research into the friction stir welding (FSW) of both thick section light metal alloys such as aluminium and magnesium, and high plasticisation point materials such as steel, titanium and nickel-based alloys.  A metallurgist by training, and winner of the Richard Weck Award for his work on steel, Stephen led TWI’s Core Research Programme (CRP) into the development of FSW for steel, and also led the welding elements of two recent projects looking at steel FSW for marine construction.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD): Attending this event supports your professional development.  You can claim 2 CPD points per hour for this event.  As a member of the Welding Institute you can record your CPD activity online from your membership portal.
