Overview: Welding procedure and welder qualification testing is commonplace within many industry sectors. The lecture will focus on the use of the Welding Procedure Specification (WPS), the Welding Procedure Qualification Record (WPQR) and the Welder Qualification Test Certificate (WQTC) and will be of specific interest to those who already have exposure to welding procedures and welder qualification testing, or will do so as part of their work.
This presentation provides examples of, and answers to, some of the common misdemeanors that are found when managing such documentation. It highlights some of the common errors, inadvertent omissions and routine mistakes that are found when such documents are scrutinised in the field.
The Welding Procedure Qualification Record is sometimes received from the Inspection Body or the Examiner but is assumed to be compliant and is not cross-checked by the Fabricator. What checks should be made?
The pitfalls of not scrutinising the documentation will be illustrated with some real-world examples of errors related to the range of qualification, the testing and test results.
The Welder Qualification Test Certificate has a “range of qualification” which in principle is similar to that of the WPS or WPQR. The presentation explores the limitations and conflicts between the qualification standard versus those of the production application. The requirements for verifying the WQTC and the impact this has on the validity of the certificate is also discussed

This includes over 35 years in the education, training and professional development of a vast range of personnel involved in welding, welding inspection and non-destructive testing, from welder to inspector and from designer to engineer.
