This is an East Midlands Branch event organised and run by the East Midlands Branch Committee on behalf of Branch members. Other members are very welcome to register for this talk. Non-Members are also welcome to join us.

Overview: A new approach is described for obtaining metal stress-strain relationships from indentation experiments.  It involves high loads (kN range) and large spherical indenters (~ 1 mm radius), with indent profiles being measured.  These are target outcomes for inverse FEM modelling, converging on best fit parameter values in a true stress – true strain relationship.  This allows simulation of any loading configuration, including tensile testing.  Commercial products are available for which indentation, profilometry and convergence are all automated and rapidly implemented.  Conceptual and practical issues, both measurement-related and sample-related (anisotropy, inhomogeneities and residual stresses), will be summarised.  Illustrative case studies will be presented, including an example of its application to welds.

Speaker: Bill Clyne. Chief Scientific Officer, Plastometrex

Speaker Biography: Bill Clyne is Chief Scientific Officer of Plastometrex Ltd, a start-up in Cambridge, and Emeritus Professor in Cambridge University, having held a Chair in Mechanics of Materials there for 25 years.  His interests cover the thermo-mechanics of composites, metals and coatings, focussing on novel mechanical testing methods.  He has authored 400 papers, 3 textbooks and 10 educational software packages.  He was President of the Federation of European Materials Societies (http://www.fems.org/) and is now an Honorary Member.  He is the Director of DoITPoMS (www.doitpoms.ac.uk/), which hosts an Educational Materials Science website.  He is an FREng, a Helmholtz International Fellow and a Leverhulme Emeritus Fellow.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD): Attending this event supports your professional development.  You can claim 2 CPD points per hour for this event.  As a member of the Welding Institute you can record your CPD activity online from your membership portal.
