This is a Teesside Branch event organised and run by the Teesside Branch Committee on behalf of Branch members. Other members are very welcome to register for this talk. Non-Members are also welcome to join us.

Overview: TWI was challenged to weld a repair patch inside a 36” diameter steel pipe which was suffering from internal corrosion at the 6’o clock position. The solution had to be deployed offshore, subsea and with the oil still flowing…  Interesting given that we need friction to make a friction stir weld, and oil is good at eliminating that.  It’s now being considered for other types of repair, including processing existing but fatigued weld roots in pipelines, subsea risers and wind turbine towers

Speaker: Stephen Cater (Principle Project Leader, TWI)

Speaker Biography:Steve is responsible for research into the friction stir welding (FSW) of both thick section light metal alloys such as aluminium and magnesium, and high plasticisation point materials such as steel, titanium and nickel-based alloys. A metallurgist by training, and winner of the Richard Weck Award for his work on steel, Stephen led TWI’s Core Research Programme (CRP) into the development of FSW for steel, and also led the welding elements of two recent projects looking at steel FSW for marine construction

Continuing Professional Development (CPD): Attending this event supports your professional development.  You can claim 2 CPD points per hour for this event.  As a member of the Welding Institute you can record your CPD activity online from your membership portal.
