MEET OUR EXPERT SPEAKERS

DR GEORGE THEODOSOPOULOS

Presentation title: Plastics recycling and sustainability

George joined TWI Ltd in February 2019 and is a Senior Project Leader in the Polymer & Composite Technologies Group and the Plastics Recycling and Sustainability Theme Leader for the group.

Holding a B.Sc. in Chemistry, a M.Sc. in Polymer Science and Applications and a Ph.D. in Macromolecular Chemistry, George has a track record in the development and deployment of innovative non-metallic solutions, primarily for the oil and gas industry and a strong background in polymer synthesis, applications and processing techniques. Having practiced the property manipulation of polymers through their predefined structural orientation, he has acquired a good understanding on the effect of intrinsic material properties and chemistry of the monomer units on the behaviour and long-term effect polymer systems in selected environments.

DR CHRISTOPHER LOVELL

Presentation title: The SolRec 2 Project - EU funded project that aims towards the development of innovative digital watermarks and green solvents for the recovery and recycling of multi-layer materials

Christopher Lovell has recently joined the Novel Polymer Technologies Section at TWI Ltd bringing expertise in the processing, structure and properties of thermoplastics. Previously he worked for 7 years at Lucideon Ltd in the Advanced Materials & Processes Consultancy and delivered on a wide variety projects in materials science and technology development for commercial customers, primarily in the consumer healthcare and medical device sectors, as well as contributing to numerous UK and EU public funded collaborations.

He holds a PhD in Polymer Physics and an MPhys in Physics both obtained at the University of Leeds and undertook post-doctoral research at the Centre de Mise en Forme des Matériaux at MINES ParisTech.

DR ALAN TAYLOR

Presentation title: Surface Icing: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow

Dr Alan Taylor is a Technology Fellow at TWI Ltd specialising in the evaluation and characterisation of functional surfaces and coatings in the Novel Polymer Technologies section. He has over 25 years’ experience and has been involved in over 120 Single Client Projects and more than 40 large public funded collaborative projects covering every industrial sector.

Alan sits on the editorial boards of a number of coatings and surface engineering journals. He also sits on the board of the Surface Engineering Leadership Forum, is an expert reviewer for the ECs Marie Skłodowska–Curie doctoral network programme, the EPSRC Future Leader Fellowship Scheme and has acted as a reviewer for the Royal Society.

He is a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. He has eight patents, has published over 40 articles and has mentored 10 PhD candidates.

EUR ING DR ANNA WOJDYLA

Presentation title: Novel Advanced Coatings for Cost Reduction and Extended Service Life

Anna is a Principal Project Leader at TWI. She received her MSc Eng in Chemical Engineering with specialization in Fuel Technology from AGH University of Science and Technology, Poland, in 2010. After graduation, she worked at the SHR Research Timber Institute in Netherlands, where she gained experience in silicon chemistry and coating technology.

In 2013, she joined TWI Ltd and NSIRC, where she was involved in European and UK founded collaborative projects and was sponsored by TWI Ltd to undertaken a PhD degree in assessment of advanced coatings and surface treatments at Brunel University in London. Her research was focused on the development of novel assessment criteria for durability evaluation of highly repellent surfaces. Over the period of the PhD programme Anna published two peer review papers and several conference articles.

In 2016, she joined TWI Ltd staff as Project Leader in the Functional Coatings and Resins department, where she has major technical involvement in European and UK funded projects as well as Single Client.

ASST. PROF. SERKAN UNAL

Presentation title: ISOPREP – An Innovative Approach for the Ionic Solvent-based Recycling of Polypropylene Products

Serkan Ünal obtained his B.Sc. degree in Chemistry from Koç University in 2001. He completed his Ph.D. in Organic-Polymer Chemistry at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA, USA in 2005. Before joining Sabanci University, Istanbul, Turkey in 2012, he worked as a research scientist at Bayer MaterialScience LLC (today known as Covestro) in Pittsburgh, PA, USA between 2005 and 2012.

Dr. Ünal serves as a faculty member at the Sabancı University Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Research and Application Center (SU-IMC) and Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences. His research activities focus on the synthesis and structure-property relationships in macromolecules; polymeric composites; functional coatings, adhesives and membranes for the environment; recycling and sustainability in polymeric materials, plastics and composite products.

Dr. Ünal has been leading all R&D efforts by Sabanci University in the Horizon 2020 funded project, ISOPREP, which is the topic of his presentation in this event.
