North Scottish Branch AGM and Technical Talk

This is a North Scottish Branch event, organised and hosted by our North Scottish Branch Committee  for members of The Welding Institute's  North Sottish, Scottish and Highland and Islands Branch members. Other members and guests are very welcome to join us.

Overview: It’s important to get fracture toughness testing right, but there are so many options to consider when choosing your approach. Matt will introduce the key concepts of fracture toughness, discuss the purpose of testing standards, outline what the various standards cover, and give some general advice on picking the right standard for your application.

Speaker:  Matt Haslett (Team Leader – Environmental Testing, Fatigue and Fracture Integrity Management, TWI Limited)

Speaker Biography: Matt joined TWI in 2012. He read Mechanical Engineering (MEng) at the University of Cambridge (Churchill College) and has prior work experience in Nuclear Engineering, the Armed Forces (Royal Navy) and the MOD. He is currently the Team Leader for Environmental Testing in the Fatigue and Fracture Integrity Management (FIM) section, a Chartered Engineer (IMechE) and a Fellow of The Welding Institute.

Matt’s main areas of expertise lie in fracture toughness testing (in air and environment), general mechanical testing (both standard and bespoke) and Engineering Critical Assessment. In addition, he lectures on a number of TWI training courses and mentors colleagues working towards Chartership. He is also currently studying for an Executive MBA with NSIRC and De Montfort University (Leicester).

He is a previous Chair of The Welding Institute Younger Members’ Committee, with a particular interest in education outreach, and is still involved in various outreach programmes at TWI.

Please note, the Branch AGM will commence at 5:30pm prior to the talk.
