East Midlands Branch Technical Talk (FREE!)

This is an East Midlands Branch event organised and run by our East Midlands Branch for its members. Other members and non-members are welcome to join us.

Overview:  Presentation about underwater joining processes of high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels and ways to minimize the main problems. Firstly, different underwater welding methods will be described. Secondly, the most important problems and their results. In the next step, the differences of the quality of the joints during different welding conditions. At the last step, proposed improvement methods will be presented. The most important are: modification of welding parameters, criterion of steel selection, temper bead welding technique, modification of filler materials

Speaker: Prof. Jacek Tomkow (Gdańsk University of Technology)

Speaker Biography: Engineer in 2011, Master of Science in 2012, Philosophy Doctor in 2018, Doctor of Science (habilitation) in 2022 – each graduated at GUT. Associate Professor since 2022 at GUT. Expert in the field of underwater welding processes, especially manual metal arc welding and friction stir welding, both in wet welding conditions. Mostly focused on the weldability of steel, especially HSLA, AHS and UHS steels. In scientific work he discovered the methods of minimizing susceptibility to cold cracking, and improvement the quality of wet welded joints.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD): Attending this event supports your professional development.  You can claim 2 CPD points per hour for this event.  As a member of the Welding Institute you can record your CPD activity online from your membership portal.
