Eastern Counties Branch Technical Talk

This free event is organised by our Eastern Counties Branch for our members. Other members and non-members are very welcome to join us.

Overview:-  In this talk, Dr Gandhi will introduce the audience to the two topics:

  • Electric battery joining using ultrasonic and laser welding and
  • Diffusion bonding of micro-channelled polymers

Joining and recycling are pivotal aspects of electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing, enabling the creation of functional battery packs and sustainable practices. During this talk, Dr Gandhi will dive deep into the cutting-edge advancements in joining and recycling technologies for EV batteries. He will explore joining methods, conduct trials, and discuss the testing of EV dummy cells.

In the second part of the talk, Dr Gandhi will introduce the diffusion bonding process for manufacturing novel microfluidic devices, primarily targeted at the bio-pharmaceutical industry, to reduce cost, improve quality, increase in process yield and establish clean, safe and sustainable process.

Speaker:- Dr Abbasi A Gandhi (Principal Project Leader, TWI)

Speaker Biography:-  Abbasi is a Principal Project Leader in the Thermal Processing Technologies (TPT) team, which is a part of Advanced Manufacturing Group, at TWI, Cambridge, UK.  He holds a PhD in experimental physics from University of Limerick and has 16+ years of R&D experience in highly regulated industries with a primary focus on materials development, joining, advanced manufacturing, coating and testing. As well as having over 35 peer-reviewed journal papers, 3 granted patents and 3 book chapters to his name, he has presented his work in 53 national/international conferences in many parts of the World. He has been involved in several UK and European collaborative research programmes, and has managed numerous high value industry projects.
