    Sheffield Branch Technical Talk

This is a Sheffield Branch event organised and run by our Sheffield Branch for its members. Other members and non-members are welcome to join us.

Overview: Building on experience learnt from some work undertaken by TWI, Steve will talk about how repairs in oil pipelines and other situations can be carried out offshore, subsea and with the oil still flowing. An interesting challenge given that we need friction to make a friction stir weld, and oil is good at eliminating that.  These techniques are now being considered for other types of repair, including processing existing but fatigued weld roots in pipelines, subsea risers and wind turbine towers

Speaker: Stephen Cater (Principal Project Leader, TWI)

Speaker Biography:Steve is responsible for research into the friction stir welding (FSW) of both thick section light metal alloys such as aluminium and magnesium, and high plasticisation point materials such as steel, titanium and nickel-based alloys. A metallurgist by training, and winner of the Richard Weck Award for his work on steel, Stephen led TWI’s Core Research Programme (CRP) into the development of FSW for steel, and also led the welding elements of two recent projects looking at steel FSW for marine construction

Continuing Professional Development (CPD): Attending this event supports your professional development.  You can claim 2 CPD points per hour for this event.  As a member of the Welding Institute you can record your CPD activity online from your membership portal.

          Sheffield Branch Technical Talk

This is a Sheffield Branch event organised and run by our Sheffield Branch for its members. Other members and non-members are welcome to join us.

Overview: Many non-engineering personnel can be forgiven for inferring that all personnel identified as ‘welding engineers’ have the necessary skills needed to provide solutions associated with ALL joining methods, even if they are solely involved with metallic materials.  This is a very precarious situation for such personnel to find themselves faced with, especially as we move into an era where joining engineering required by the energy and transportation sectors will become a critical discipline for success. This talk will consider the issues and opportunities this challenge presents.

Full abstract can be read here

Speaker: Prof. Steve Jones PhD, CEng, FWeldI Professor of Welding, Brazing and Bonding Technologies, University of Sheffield
