Overview:- Manufacturing of high performance and complex parts in a cost-effective and resource efficient manner is one of the key challenges industries are currently facing. Traditional manufacturing processes such as casting-forging, machining and welding do not offer the required flexibility in the design and manufacture of high value engineering parts efficiently or without significant material wastage. Moreover, engineering materials processed through traditional manufacturing processes usually possess a range of defects such as porosity, elemental segregation, anisotropy in microstructure and materials’ properties, etc. Near net shape powder metallurgy, hot isostatic pressing (NNS PM HIP) technique represents a valid alternative, which can guarantee the manufacture of complex parts with isotropic superior materials’ properties. This webinar will aim to provide some practical examples on the design strategies used to manufacture near net shape parts through the NNS PM HIP technique. Furthermore, to prove the industrial viability of the process, the microstructural and mechanical properties of the manufactured parts will also be presented.

Speakers:- Dr Raja Khan CEng FWeldI (Consultant, TWI)

Speaker Biography:- Raja is currently working as Technology Consultant in the Thermal Processing Technologies (TPT) section at TWI Cambridge, where he has been since 2014. His research work is mainly focused on advanced manufacturing (additive manufacturing, near net shape powder metallurgy hot isostatic pressing), materials joining technologies, powder characterisation, post-thermal processing, surface engineering and he is currently working on multidisciplinary projects funded by both private and public sector bodies. He is also a member of ASME Standards AMS additive manufacturing metal committee.
