Sheffield Branch Presentation: TWI's Research Programme and its Impact on Industry

        What will the event cover:

Research at TWI: Past, Present, and Future:

TWI’s research addresses challenges in the successful industrialisation of material systems, from manufacture, though operation, to decommissioning and recycling. Welding and allied technologies enable the design and manufacture of a wide range of high integrity components, structures and systems that would otherwise be unachievable. However, when welded, materials become more susceptible to failure via a variety of mechanisms localised at the joints. Pushing the boundaries of welding, joining and surface engineering is at the heart of TWI’s service to Members, whilst establishing pragmatic solutions to the avoidance of weld failure is critical for the safety and commercial viability of engineered systems. The presentation gives an overview of the past, present and future of TWI's research activity, including looking at developments in process technology and assurance that ‘flaws’ can be managed safely.

        Our industry expert:

Dr Paul Woollin FREng, FWeldI, FIMMM, Chief Technology and Quality Assurance Officer at TWI Ltd

        Meet the speaker:

Paul Woollin is Chief Technology and Quality Assurance Officer TWI Ltd, responsible for setting the research direction and technical quality standards of services provided to TWI’s Members worldwide. He joined TWI in 1992 and was appointed to the Executive Board in 2010. His research concentrates on the integrity of welds, particularly in stainless steels, including the generation of data and microstructure-performance relationships that underpin standards for the avoidance of hydrogen induced stress cracking in ferritic-austenitic stainless steels.

        Benefits from attending the event:

        • Information transfer from experts
        • Discussion, questions and answers on the specific topics
