Sheffield Branch Technical Presentation: Insights into the welding of plastic and
Annual General Meeting (2026) (In-person only)
The Welding Institute Sheffield Branch invite you a Technical Presentation followed by their 2026 AGM:
The Presentation and AGM will take place on 23 February 2026 at 6pm at TWI Technology Centre, Wallis Way, Catcliffe, Rotherham, S60 5TZ
Presentation: Insights into the welding of plastic
What the presentation will cover/what you will learn:
Part 1: Identifies the two key structural features controlling the behaviour of polyethylene (PE) materials. This is to assist pure metallurgists.
Part 2: Looks at the behaviour of welds on thin (30um) PE films, and how molecular weight is key to their behaviour.
Part 3: Explores ho the molecular weight of PE used to manufacture pressure pipes has profound influence on the toughness of welds made between pipes.
Part 4: Discusses the different welding conditions used by the UK gas and water industries for pressure pipes made from the same PR materials, suggesting that harmonisation of the welding parameters can bring benefits to both utilities.
Industry Expert: Jeremy Bowman, Retired, PEW Training Ltd
Meet the Speaker: Jeremy Bowman has a first degree in metallurgy and materials science and a PhD from Liverpool University for work on polymer processing. He was for 11 years a lecturer in materials science at Brunel University, then worked for 25 years in polyethylene pipe manufacturing companies. From 1994 to 2000, he was on the Research Board of TWI Ltd, and was also co-chairperson of two international conferences on plastic pipes. He has multiple papers and three patents to his name; one patent for artificial bone was exploited to aid the recovery of hearing.
